Guidelines for Submissions

Articles

We are looking for seasonal articles for each of the categories on the home page (see below for more detail). We prefer short (500 words) articles, preferably with some interactive content, for instance, recipes or instructions. Two things make us really happy: it’s personal (that is specific to a particular place and time) or it’s based on  some great research (in which case, please include either links or reference to your sources). If you can send us a photograph to accompany your story, that’s great!

Photographs

We are always looking for good seasonal photographs to illustrate our articles. Please submit photographs as TIF files (JPGs are also OK). Horizontal photos should be 588 pixels wide; vertical photos should be 150 pixels wide. Depth can vary. Please let us know how you want to be credited or if you want a link to your website.

Art work will be considered but should be directly related to the themes below.

At this time, we are not paying for articles or photographs but we will give you a free ad (for your business, website or a business you recommend).

Sections and What We Are Want:

Celebrations: Tell us about a seasonal holiday: the way it’s celebrated in another country, or another time, or the way you work with the symbols in your own life. Not interested in accounts of rituals you’ve attended or liturgies you’ve written but we are interested in that weird custom you observed while traveling or some unique food your mother serves on that day.

Food & Drink: A short article about a seasonal dish or beverage you make or enjoy at this time of the year.  Focus on its history, its meaning in your life. Include recipes. Very interested in food associated with holidays.

Crafts: Write about things you can make at this season, perhaps with items found in nature or related to a particular holiday or quality or activity of the season. Provide instructions so we can do it do.

Spirit: Write an essay about the qualities of the season as they manifest in your life or any spiritual practices or deities appropriate to the season. This one can be more reflective.

In the Natural World: Tell us about a plant, animal or mineral that you associate with this season. Points if you can actually teach us something (like why leaves fall or birds sing) while telling a personal story.

At Home: What do you do inside your house at this season and how is it related to the season? Give us some ideas we can try. Home-making is an art and Martha Stewart the patron saint for this category.

Signs of the Season: Open to any (very short) submissions that describe what’s happening right now where you live. These will be posted as they arrive. Please include at least part of your name (for example, Waverly F. or W. Fitzgerald or W.F. or  Waverly Fitzgerald) and your location (Seattle, WA).

Star Cycles: Observations of the night sky, stories about constellations or astrological overviews that are related to the upcoming season.

NO poetry at this time.
