I can't play a musical instrument, can't dance worth a lick, but when I'm cooking like this, really cooking, I feel a rhythm that is sensual, passionate, and surprisingly solitary. I know there are all sorts of articles about making meal preparation a shared event, and I try, Lord knows I try, to allow others into that world. But when I catch my rhythm, I become oblivious to everything and everyone around me. It's my alone time, time to create in solitude at the end of a day that is usually bereft of such a luxury.
Preserving, baking, and putting up is something I grew up watching my grandmothers and my mother do and they all preferred to work alone. I realize now, we were all voyeurs to their private passion; in watching and waiting, we were learning the joy of anticipation while my mother and grandmothers were gaining a respite from the daily chaos of households full of chores, children and extended family members. I think it was a way for them to recharge; I know I often feel completely relaxed after accomplishing a perfect loaf of bread or a time consuming sauce, even as I watch my creations greedily devoured.
Perhaps, someday, when it's just me and my husband, I'll allow him into my private space; for now, I'm afraid, he'll simply have to enjoy the foreplay.

Clara,

This isn't my article so you should write directly to the author, Sonya Lea, and ask her for permission.
Of course, I would love it if you mention you first saw it in my magazine and encourage folks to sign up.
But Sonya would have to give permission to reproduce it.

No worries about the misspelling. I love it that you have a friend name WaveNey.
That's new to me!

Carol--
No, you aren't being blonde. You caught something both Sonya and I missed.
I'll fix it so now no one will know what we're talking about (the peach lavender jam recipe used to say shake buds into the lavender).

What a fantastic article! I've been playing around with food preservation for a couple years and made a number of jams, infusions and canned goodies. I have lavender sugar going in the cupboard right now and might just use it to make peach jam. How fantastic! :)

I really enjoyed this article! I can't wait to try the recipes. I have been making very big changes in my life over the past several years, and this year is probably seeing the biggest changes. I am making more and more foods from scratch, yogurt, breads, kombucha, cheese, hummus... and on and on, and I look forward this year to preserving more foods. I love the sensual connection with food that is touched on in this article. I even added a couple of the reference books to my to-read list on www.goodreads.com. Thanks for sharing.
